Advanced Apprentice Submarines Mechanical Fitter (Site & Facilities) Barrow
Job Description
What you will be doing
As an apprentice maintenance Mechanical Fitter you will gain experience of working with system fault diagnostics, where you will need to demonstrate excellent problem solving skills to identify and resolve problems, along with servicing on mechanical equipment.
You will work to drawings, manufacturer’s manuals, schedules to comply with legislation with a particular attention to detail. Working as part of a team you will be required to demonstrate openness and collaboration in your work. You will learn how to operate plant equipment, working with hydraulics on equipment like, CNC machines and lathes, industrial gas distribution and pneumatic tooling carrying out all work in line with BAE Systems safe system of work.
You will spend 12 months at Furness College, and the following year join our team of maintenance professionals to gain hands on experience and understanding of our wide range of equipment across site. You will be moved around the different areas of the department to gain a full understanding of the maintenance requirements in BAE Systems.

Our Submarines business has been safely delivering world class submarines to the UK Royal Navy for more than a century.
The Astute class will equip the Royal Navy with its largest and most capable generation of attack submarines. We are responsible for the design, build, test and commissioning of these state-of-the-art vessels. In total, seven boats will make up the fleet, each weighing a mighty 7,400 tonnes.
Dreadnought is the successor to the Vanguard class of nuclear deterrent submarines. We will deliver four submarines to the Royal Navy, with the first submarine entering service in the early 2030s. Dreadnought is widely considered to be one of the world’s most complex engineering challenges.
