Level 6 Applied Professional Engineering Programme Degree Apprenticeship – Control Technical Support Pathway-jlr

Job Description

Level 6 Applied Professional Engineering Programme Degree Apprenticeship

Our Level 6 Applied Professional Engineering Programme Degree Apprenticeship is aimed at those with a passion for learning and innovation.

We’re reimagining the future of automotive, refining the quality of our combustion engines and expanding into electrification. As an Applied Professional Engineering Degree Apprentice, you will become a multi-disciplinary engineer, developing digital technology solutions for modern luxury vehicles that are renowned for their desirability and performance.

Control Technical Support pathway

Control Technical Support Engineers are responsible for the design, installation and commissioning of the buildings and assembly facilities that we use to manufacture future products. Your skillset will ensure that breakdowns are minimised, and issues are rapidly and permanently resolved.

Notably, you will focus on control processes that use sensors as an input while testing, planning, installing, monitoring and maintaining control systems as required. You will also ensure that all instruments used within the engineering labs are calibrated. This is a vital workstream due to the increased quantity of rigs to be installed in the next five years in the engineering labs.

Along the way, you could work in any of the following functional areas: Engineering Propulsion (EP), Engineering Operations (EO) or Global Manufacturing Engineering (GME). You will be asked to indicate your preference during the application process.

Engineering Operations (EO) - Whitley, Gaydon and Lyons Park

Engineering Operations are at the heart of JLR Engineering. Involved at every stage of the engineering process, they underpin technical innovation and product delivery with programme management, tools and processes and specialist technical services to deliver our world class products.

You could find yourself working within our Climatic Test Team or Controls Team, where you’ll develop skills such as project management, problem solving communication, embedded control, software design and test facility commissioning. This will include learning about Programmable Logic Controller software and the successful operation of robots, putting you at the forefront of propulsion technologies.

Engineering Propulsion (EP) - Whitley or Gaydon

Our Propulsion Engineering team are leaders in the design, test, validation and certification of world-class propulsion systems aimed at delivering driving experiences that our customers will love for life. The scope of our propulsion systems is far-reaching and includes major commodity groups such as electric drive units, energy storage devices, engines, transmissions and drivelines, complemented by software system integration, calibration and control strategies.

As a controls apprentice you will be a valuable member of the design and development team working on a wide range of control strategies for commodities and systems, such as whole vehicle high voltage architecture, engine and transmission electrical control units, chargers, inverters, battery management systems and electric machines.

Global Manufacturing Engineering (GME) - Castle Bromwich, Solihull and Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre

Our GME team supports the projects and innovation that enables our JLR Reimagine Strategy across our global locations. As an apprentice you will join our Metrology team based in Castle Bromwich or our Standards and Controls department in Solihull or our Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre (EPMC).

Apprentices based at our Pilot Plant facility in Castle Bromwich will be responsible for the design, installation and commissioning of manufacturing facilities and processes to build the modern luxury vehicles of the future. Quickly gaining real-world experience, you will play a key role in transforming our brands as we realise our future business transformation.

Apprentices based in Solihull or our EPMC will work with the team to build on the joint knowledge and working principles of all JLR departments to achieve a common approach to Standards for Manufacturing Equipment. The team are responsible for defining a common standard to be used across all Manufacturing areas, Virtual PLCs (programmable logic controller) for upfront commissioning of PLC Software, a common Spares Strategy across the business and implementation of new E-plan electrical drawing software.

If you enjoy problem solving and being at the heart of making things happen, then our GME roles will give you the opportunity to work through the end-to-end product lifecycle, with multiple stakeholders internally and externally, including engineers who use the data to make critical adjustments.

A network of apprentice tutors and line managers will regularly review your progress and offer advice to support you in performing at your best.

These modules are taught in blocks throughout the academic year by Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG), a key part of the University of Warwick. You will benefit from a mix of lectures, practical laboratory assignments, seminars and tutorials delivered in person and online, and enjoy access to a virtual learning environment for further support.

In your final year, you will undertake a work-based project that also forms part of your End Point Assessment (EPA). On successful completion of your EPA, you will achieve your Level 6 Apprenticeship, ready for an amazing career with JLR.
