What you will be doing

During the Engineering Technician Pipe Worker Advanced Apprenticeship you will, through a range of different engineering activities develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours of the apprenticeship standard, whilst gaining valuable experience working on maritime vessels which will culminate in you completing an End Point Assessment.

The Engineering Technician Pipe Worker Advanced Apprenticeship is typically a 48 Month (4 years) scheme, the first year of which will be spent in our Skills and Development Centre completing a practical based qualification. The Pipe worker role involves working from engineering drawings, data and documentation in order to undertake the fabrication, installation, testing, commissioning and removal of fluid power and domestic pipe systems on ships and submarines in defence and commercial shipping. This can include systems associated with propulsion, machinery, weapons, reactor and auxiliary (such as water, air conditioning and power generation). It requires knowledge and expertise in the use of common and specialist pipe forming machine and hand tools.

Specific activities could include:

A Pipe worker will use a variety of measuring and diagnostic processes to ensure individual components and assemblies meet the required specification. They must comply with statutory regulations, organisational safety requirements and be expected to work both individually and as part of a team. They will work with minimum supervision, taking responsibility for the quality and accuracy of the work they undertake and be proactive in finding solutions to problems and identifying improvements to business processes.

What Qualification will you get?

By the end of the apprenticeship you will obtain:

•    Level 3 Engineering Technician Apprenticeship Certificate

•    Level 3 Maritime Defence Engineering (Development Knowledge & Competence)

•    Level 2 Maritime Defence Engineering (Foundation Knowledge & Competence)  

•    Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English (If not previously achieved)

Our highly skilled teams design, develop, support and maintain a wide range of complex equipment. This includes Spearfish, one of the most powerful and capable wire guided torpedoes on the market. Currently undergoing a major upgrade programme, Spearfish will soon benefit from further sophisticated advances in its homing, warheads, tactical and fuelling systems, as well an upgraded guidance link. Then there’s Artisan, the 3D radar that can identify a target the size of a tennis ball, travelling at a speed of more than 2000 miles an hour more than 25 kilometres away!
